Death is a flexible state in Corwyth, is it not?
There is a resurrected skeleton practising medicine, a Rusalka wandering
around somewhere, and now you have spent more money than you should have
upon this possibly apocryphal guide describing the Realm of the Dead...
The Realm of the Dead
A place unseen by living souls... Oh, how the Salinians attempt to find this realm! But no Eeleethosaur would permit a Salinian to gain entry... and scarcely any living being has entered into this solemn place.
To enter the Realm of the Dead, firstly there's a long and arduous journey to the Ringed Valley, which is surrounded by the Sleeping Mountain. It is said that the Sleeping Mountain may block the way to the valley unless it is pleased.
Once in the valley, the adventurer will see that it is faintly purple, that Eeleethosaurs roam the valley, and that an elegantly erected pagoda with a large statue of Master Jjones (Death) stands in the precise middle. The adventurer will need to persuade the Eeleethosaurs that roam therethat he/she means no harm, and only wants to find the Key to the Realm of the Dead. Well, the Eeleethosaurs are not incredibly intelligent creatures, although they are sentient – but one thing is important to them above all: ensuring that the Key doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
The key unlocks the way to a Staircase, in which all sight becomes completely useless since all light is completely absent - leading directly into the Realm of the Dead's first level. Maidens of Vanity wander about here (not real maidens, but a sort of large butterfly with feet) and there may even be a Glow-Wraith or two.
The Realm of the Dead is a huge hall with endless arches into other halls, which end up being the same hall, eternity within eternity... and here lie the Dead in state - men and women and children like effigies upon marble beds. They cannot be woken, for these Dead are merely the physical representation of the souls that are Elsewhere. This is the first level, known as the Whisper Halls. Death (known as Master Jjones) has free passage here, of course... although he would normally not direct the Dead here. They just... turn up after he cuts off their lifeline, hands them a map, and says, “GO. But do not collect 200 coroni.” It’s completely white, a whiteness that is beyond whiteness, and unless a Living Being who enters here has the Mirror of Susurration, he may find he can never leave, and become hopelessly lost. There is a horrible silence here, but the worst thing is that the silence seems to whisper things…
Then there is another level... found by finally locating the staircase to it (inside one of the marble effigies). Here are the transparent souls of the dead during their "exercise" period (like the exercise period of prisoners!) This, the Garden of Forgotten Aeons, is the only level which can be entered by brave enough living beings... (the usual obstacles, stone lions that want to eat the living, terrible riddles, the Knights of Death who want to stop the Living, and so on... whatever else occurs to us! – impede the staircase itself. Once through, the Knights howl in vain). It is a peaceful garden, full of Trees of Contemplation, Flowers of Untimeliness, and small statues of Master Jjones. Oh, and a visitor’s book, presided over by the Gardener, who is merely a skull connected to a garden rake. It is here that a brave person may contact one of the Dead. The Dead actually dwell (or their souls do) in either the Realm of Froh or the Realm of Woh – and it’s quite impossible to visit either. These two Realms are not available to the living. It's hard to meet a soul that's in the Realm of Froh (since that's the Realm of eternal happiness - they usually don't want to leave even for a moment!), but the souls from the Realm of Woh will frequently be found in this Garden of Forgotten Aeons. If a soul from the Realm of Froh MUST be contacted, special arrangements COULD be made with Master Jjones himself, but it’s more than likely that the soul in question will prove elusive.
